How to Choose The Right Sized Cake

Do you want to order or make a cake for a special event on your calendar? Most likely you’ll want to make sure that you don’t make a cake too small or too big.

Usually it's better to have more than enough, rather than not enough, but to get as close to the right size is ideal.

For a 1 year old, party cakes are normally cut into very small pieces.

While for an adult’s birthday, cakes are cut a little bigger although in most cases , a lot of people usually decline a piece of cake especially where alcohol is served.

I find that at certain parties the amount of cake you require will be a slightly different each time.

Therefore, when it’s time for cake, smaller portions is usually preferred as everybody’s tummy is usually full from all of the other tasty treats.

For the choice of cake, I find for more laid back events such as, baby/bridal showers or children’s birthdays, most prefer buttercream cakes, while more formal events such as wedding’s, adult’s birthdays and 21st birthdays, a more refined fondant cake is preferred.

In both cases, the serving size piece is usually smaller as there are usually more mouths to feed, and most have already been fed with a proper meal size beforehand.

A buttercream standard 8″ round cake feeds approximately 15-18 people while an 8″ round fondant covered cake usually feeds approximately 22-25 people.

Another reason why cakes purchased from a cake maker feeds more people is because the cake usually stands 3-4 inches high, whereas if you were to bake a cake for yourself, most recipes allow for about a 2 inch high cake.

So because there is more cake upwards, this means that less cake sideways needs to be served.

Just remember choosing the right sized cake for your special event is an important part of planning.
